USS Zumwalt

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on August 30, 2014

This is a photo of the US Navy’s new Zumwalt-class destroyer being constructed at the Bath Iron Works in Bath, ME. Note the weird inverted hull design, called “Tumblehome,” which is supposed to be better at messing with enemy radar. Tumblehome naval ships haven’t been in use since the Russians fought the Japanese in 1905. The Zumwalt was supposed to be the backbone of the US Navy, but as technical issues arose over the years, the government’s order decreased from 32 ships to just three. This one, probably the USS Zumwalt, should be commissioned in 2018. The cost will be about $3.5 billion. (Thanks Wikipedia).

Jen and I are up in Maine for a few days visiting our friends Matty and Dena. This afternoon I borrowed their black lab, Rubbles, and went for a hike.

For the Love of Reading

It was a great day to sit outside with a good book…. That’s my Aunt Elizabeth, a long time elementary school teacher, reading to our 6-year-old campers.

The George Street Hill Climb

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on August 25, 2014

Yet another event crossed off my Worcester Bucket List. The George Street Hill Climb, where every year about 90 cyclists compete (one at a time) to ride up the steepest hill in the city. This year, though, only about 30 competitors got to ride before the event was called off due to rain. I think the fastest time up the 500′ incline was a little over 2 minutes. After this I drove to the Red Cross to donate platelets and then went to Trinity to meet with the camp counselors for the first time.

Cleaning out some old stuff this afternoon…. This was my first pair of Doc Martens, the main shoes I wore from about 1999 to 2009. RIP.

Crash Bang Boom

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on August 20, 2014

I was backing out of a parking place and tapped another car which was standing behind me. No one was hurt and it caused justa small dent in the other woman’s driver side door. Even though I was moving at about 3 miles an hour, for some reason the impact was enough to completely shatter my back glass.
What’s frustrating is the woman shouldn’t have been idling in the lane behind me. My insurance writes off anything less that $500 damage; the damage to her car was $526. And my last speeding ticket was in 2010, and that was just about to fall off my insurance. Argh. Oh well, it could’ve been worse.

THEY WIN!!

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on August 14, 2014

My nieces and I went to the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks versus Worcester Bravehearts game tonight. It was the second game in the FCBL 3-game championship. series. The B’Hearts won, 1 to 0. Not bad for the inaugural season. As you can tell from the photo, there’s a decent sized crowd in the stands… the game was a sell out with more than 3100 people. I remember going to the Tornadoes games in their final season and having an entire section to myself; it was cool to see so many people in the stands they could actually get the wave going. College baseball isn’t the best baseball, but it’s baseball and I’m glad it’s back in Worcester. Congrats, Bravhearts, thanks for coming to our camp and we’ll see you in 2015.
