Spencer Fair 2013
At the Spencer Fair with Josh, Jenn and Jen. Where else can you see alpacas, deep dried Oreos, and a minivan demolition derby?

Go Todd Go
Earlier this year I wrote an article for the Telegram and Gazete on Todd Ruggere, the Grafton man who is traveling to each of the 351 towns and cities in Massachusetts to dronk a beer and raise money for the Jimyy Fund. Tonight Todd was at Owen O’Leary’s in Westboro, not too far from my office in Worcester, so my friend Rachel and I drove out to meet him. Since I last interviewed him (in February or March, at Barre Mills Restaurant), he’s now completed about 330-something towns, with about a dozen more to go. He’s also raised about $33,000 to help fight childhood cancer. Todd’s a good guy… I’ll try to keep track when he’s going to lift that final pint in Boston.

Worcester Has a Dream…
Today was the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic “I Have A Dream” speech. Jen and I went to see a reading of the text at noon today at City Hall Plaza in Worcester. People from the audience volunteered to come to the podium and each read a paragraph. I gotta say, it was pretty cool to hear the words we know so well spoken with various accents.

PawSox
Tonight I went to the Pawtucket Red Sox game with Paul B and Jeff, two friends from high school. They palyed the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Railriders, the farm team for the Yankees. Despite being down 1-0 for most of the game, the PawSox came back in the 9th and won with a walk off single.

Caught in the Web
Another photo from our Mid State Trail Hike. This perfect web was suspended across the trail, right at head level. It was a neat sight, with August’s afternoon sun reflected off the threads.

Mid State Trail, Day 3
This morning Jena, Paul and I set out on the third leg of our 2013 Mid State Trail hike. We covered about 15 miles, from Rt 9 in Spencer to Rt 122 in Rutland. We also crossed the Midway of the Midstate (44 miles). Theweather was great, not too hot or humid, but we were beleaguered by gnats and ‘squitos. We passed through the outskirts of Treasure Valley Boy Scout Reservation and Browning Pond, which I hadn’t laid eyes upon since I last volunteered there in 1994. Wow. Our next venture, which should happen some Saturday in September, will take us 15 miles from Rutland, through Barre, to Princeton.

2013 Stetson East Mini-Reunion
Tonight I went into Somerville with Kristin for dinner with Cassandra and Josh, friends I still stay in touch with from my freshman year dorm. Later we walked to Davis Square for ice cream at JP Lick’s.
I just realized that next summer will mark 20 years(!) of our friendship.

Nahant Beach
Our annual trip to the beach with Amanda, my friend from the JET program who lives in Brighton. We hadn’t seen eachother since last spring and it felt good to catch up while the tide rolled in.

A Pirate Looks At 40. Or 6.
This week I’m dog sitting for one of my co-workers. This is Rosie, a eight month golden retriever. Tonight I picked her up and brought her to the free outdoor concert in Leicester, where we met my family and watched a Jimmy Buffet cover band. Which makes me wonder, if you’re a dog, does the song a Pirate Looks at 40 become a Pirate Looks at 6? Hmmmmm……
