Marathon Pt 4

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on April 29, 2011

Look closely at the shirt of the guy on the left. I always thought the whole rub-vaseline-on-your-nipples-so-they-won’t-bleed thing was a myth. It’s not. Yoowch!

AmeriCorps Reunion Pt 2

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on April 25, 2011

While I was in Ithaca over the weekend, I also visited Jerry, another Americorps teammate I had not seen since 2001. Though he now has a wife and two cute sons, Jerry’s still Jerry.

AmeriCorps Mini-Reunion

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on April 25, 2011

This weekend I went on a mini-roadtrip to Cortland, NY, for a mini-AmeriCorps reunion. I got to catch up with some good friends, most whom I had not seen since we left the program in November 2001. Clockwise from me: Kristy, Kate (with whom I attended Obama’s Presidential Inauguration), Jen, Carrie, and Tina (who arranged my project in Haiti). It’s cool to see they are still trying to make the world a better place – Kristy is a teacher in Minnesota, Kate works for Teach for America in D.C., Jen is a recreational therapist at a hospital, Carrie is in a different AmeriCorps program in Ohio, and Tina works for Habitat for Humanity in North Carolina. I’m proud to know all of them.

Happy Birthday, Jen!

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on April 20, 2011

Today was my girlfriend Jen’s birthday. We went to a Vietnamese restaurant in Worcester for dinner, then dessert at Allgos. Here we are with Jen’s co-workers and fellow med-students at Da Lat: Top row: Alan, Ally, Tara, Tobi, Lukas, Sitting: Kate, Caitlin, Jen, Moi, Tim (with Devil Eyes). Thanks Matt for taking the photo. (For her birthday, I’m taking Jen to the Newport Folk Fest in July.)

Boston Marathon Pt. 2

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on April 19, 2011

Medical Tent B, located on St. James Street, had LCD TVs mounted on the tent posts to watch the marathon coverage (the tent was sited about three blocks from the finish line). Everyone broke into cheers when America’s Desiree Davila pulled ahead in the last 1/4 mile, but Kenya’s Caroline Kilel (who you can see collapsed on screen) pulled ahead to win the race at 2:22:36, just *two* seconds ahead of Davila.

Marathon Pt 1

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on April 18, 2011

Today I volunteered to work at the Boston Marathon, my first time volunteering for this event. There were 26,000 runners and more than 2000 volunteers. Here is a photo from inside Medical Tent B on St. James Street (Med Tent A is located at the finish line and is even larger).

Under Your Own Steam

Posted in Uncategorized by BJ Hill on April 13, 2011

Tonight I participated on a panel called “Under Your Own Steam: Biking, Running and Walking across America.” It was held at REI in Boston and sponsored by Hostelling International. My co-speakers were Katie Visco, who ran from Boston to San Diego in 2009, and Mike Cohen, who has bicycled from Seattle to Boston three times in the last 20 years. (In the photo, Mike’s route is in green, Katie’s is blue, and mine is orange.) About 30 people attended the event (including some aspiring cross-country walkers), and afterwards Paul G and my frind Lisa (who I had’t hung out with since before my trip) went out for dinner in Fenway.
