Goodbye baseball, goodbye summer…
Jen and I last night at the last Tornadoes game we’ll go to this season. They won 6-2 against the Rockland Boulders. Thanks to Jen for coming to the game, even though she had stayed up the entire night before representing the Red Cross at the state Emergency Ops Center.

Go Warriors!!
Yesterday afternoon three other Red Cross volunteers and I drove to Tantasqua High School in Southbridge to retrieve a ton of sheltering equipment we had left there last week in anticipation of the hurricane. What better way to move hundreds of cots, blankets, and baby diapers from the gym into the trucks? Recruit the football team! They made short work of what would have taken the four of us a lot more time. Thanks Warriors, good luck with your season.

Hurricane Irene 2011
Hurricane Irene hit us this weekend. It was the first hurricane I remember in Central Massachusetts since Hurricane Gloria in 1985 or 1986. Fortunately we didn’t have any damage, we just lost power from 9:30 am until about 5 pm. After dinner I drove over to the office in Worcester to make sure there wasn’t any water seeping through the basement door into the room where we keep the servers. All dry there, but we do have a sizeable tree branch which fell across the back porch.

Lost Squirrel
This is the baby squirrel which fell off the roof of our office building during the rainstorm this afternoon. My co-worker found him lying flat out in a puddle, looking like a wet rat. We figure him to be under five weeks because he still hasn’t opened his eyes. We wrapped him in a towel and put him outside in a dry box, and after a few hours his mother still hadn’t come to find him. I drove him to Tufts Vetinary School after work. On primary assessment at the wildlife clinic, it looked like nothing was broken or injured during the three-story fall. He’ll be turned over for rehabilition by a licensed volunteer and when he’s ready he’ll be released into the wild. Actually now that I think of it, he’s a pretty lucky little guy…. since it’s already almost September, he’ll probably get to stay in the warm rehab home all winter.
Mary Jane, who had the box right outside her window, named him “Squeaky” because every once in a while she’d hear him squeak out for his mom or for food. He was pretty loud.

Night at the Drive-In
Last night Josh, my friend from college, and his wife Jenn drove out from Boston to visit Worcester. We went to dinner at the Boynton, ice cream at WooBerry, and here’s Jenn, Josh and Jen at the Drive-In in Mendon.

Earl!
I’ve heard of cats who are potty trained, but never seen one in, um, action. Jen is cat-sitting for one who is. And though Earl readily pees in the toilet, he hasn’t quite mastered getting #2 in there. The stools are on the floor to prevent him from popping a squat. And no, he can’t flush yet.

Birthday Dinner in Boston
OK, One more photo from the birthday weekend. On Saturday night Jen and I drove into Boston to meet some friends for dinner. We ate at The Living Room near Faneuil Hall, and then walked over to the North End for canolis and coffee. This is a pretty dark photo taken on a cell phone, but here’s Rueben, Lisa, Rob, Jen, Jenn, Me, Josh, Arlene and Ralitsa. Thanks to Paul G for taking the photo.

Ho Ho Ho!
We went to a nice restaurant in Boston Saturday night, and the birthday cake looked suspiciously like a Ho Ho on a plate.

Hello from Walden
Jen, Henry David Thoreau, and me, at the replica of HDT’s small cabin. I read “Walden” last year and I’m glad I finally had a chance to see the pond. The park is pretty and well-kept. Jen and I walked the 1.7 mile circumference trail and then sat on the beach, read magazines, and watched the swimmers.
